Clinical pathology involves the laboratory evaluation of blood, fluids or body tissues in order to identify existing disease. Common laboratory tests include blood chemistries, complete blood counts, blood clotting times, urinalysis, faecal tests, biopsy examination, cultures and infectious disease testing.
As a compliment to our regular external laboratory services, our veterinary centre is equipped with sophisticated instruments that allow us to measure more than 40 laboratory values in-house. Our in-house laboratory capabilities allow us to check your pet’s health prior to surgery on the same morning, and allows us to get results immediately for urgent and emergency cases.
The most commonly used series of laboratory tests is the blood chemistry and haematology panel. This general health panel is crucial for evaluating the body’s electrolyte balance, and the overall functionality of the kidneys, liver, pancreas, haematopoietic and immune system. This general health panel can also be performed as a general health screen during your pet’s annual check-up and plays an integral role in the early detection of blood disorders, kidney and liver diseases, diabetes, infection, cancer and hormonal problems. Our hospital also provides accurate in-house testing for canine heartworm disease, feline leukaemia virus (FeLK) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infections.
In-house cytology is also available for immediate evaluation of skin scrapes, impressions smears, ear swabs, fluid and tissue aspirates; so we can start the appropriate treatment for your pet straight away. In addition, our hospitals are equipped to perform ultraviolet light spectrum examination of ringworm/fungal (Microsporum canis) lesions and in-house fungal cultures for Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum & Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
